For Johnson, the role is another colorful character in a string of many of them. Best known to audiences for portraying Nick Miller on “New Girl,” “Minx” was an opportunity for Johnson to play a character that didn’t fall into a clean category, while also hearkening back to a 1970s retro-cool persona that doesn’t seem to be around much anymore. “[Creator] Ellen [Rapoport] posted something today about on the Wall Street Journal, they were talking about men dressing like the ’70s, and that skeezy guy from ‘Minx,’” Johnson told IndieWire via Zoom....

Marc Spector (Isaac) is a former U.S. Marine who experiences multiple personality disorder and is given supernatural abilities by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. The trailer plays like a psychological thriller, with Marc tying himself to his bed but claiming he’s unable to sleep. From there audiences get footage of Marc experiencing these lapses in his psyche, with people looking like monsters. We also get our first look at Ethan Hawke’s still-unknown character, though considering he ends the trailer by telling Marc to “embrace the chaos” it’s all but confirmed he’ll be our villain....

Critics have panned the movie, which stars Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius, a doctor who accidentally gives himself the powers of a vampire when he attempts to treat himself for a rare blood disease. “Morbius” appears to be failing with both fans and critics, as the film currently has a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 67% is slightly better, but still low for a comic book film....

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Chris Columbus said there is no NC-17 version, but did add that multiple cuts of the movie exist. “The reality is that there was a deal between Robin and myself, which was, he’ll do one or two, three scripted takes. And then he would say, ‘Then let me play.’ And we would basically go on anywhere between 15 to 22 takes, I think 22 being the most I remember,” Columbus said....

There’s a lot to like in “Neo: The World Ends With You,” from its wacky urban fantasy story that aptly infuses outlandish plot devices into contemporary Shibuya, Japan, to its intricate combat system that allows players to mix and match an impressive variety of abilities. For fans of Square Enix’s 2007 Nintendo DS hit “The World Ends With You,” the sequel is laser-focused on titillating the senses and, for the most part, accomplishes that mission with aplomb....

The breath of life and beating heart at the center of countless, Russian nesting doll layers of artifice and art-house reference, actor Denis Menochet doesn’t just anchor “Peter von Kant,” he makes the Francois Ozon project a film. Because without its venerable lead, this twenty-first feature from France’s most prolific modern director might be something of a lark — a playful but reverent experiment that takes a gender-swapped remake of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s “The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant” and wrangles it into a deep-in-the-weeds pseudo-biopic of the German filmmaker himself....

Howard, his producers Sara Bernstein and Xan Parker, as well as Paradise residents Steve “Woody” Culleton and Michelle Johns, came together to discuss the impact making the documentary had on them. Howard had directed with fire before, most famously in the 1991 feature film “Backdraft.” But he admits working with controlled fire is nothing compared to capturing the devastating chaos of an actual forest fire. Making “Backdraft” “under highly control circumstances,” Howard said, made him realize how fire could quickly go out of control....

Nescaffier (Stephen Park), gets dragged into a crime case involving the kidnapping of the Commissaire’s (Mathieu Amalric) son. For Anderson’s go-to crafts team of cinematographer Robert Yeoman, production designer Adam Stockhausen, and composer Alexandre Desplat, it was a particularly satisfying period adventure, anchored by Wright’s sublime performance....

Caught between caring for his ailing father (Bruce Graham) and begging Nikki to let him back into her life, he’s either hit rock bottom or floating just above it. The movie huddles alongside him as he attempts to fix a broken household well beyond repair....

The show puts its audience in the nearly same position as Alan in terms of this guesswork; a sense of limited perspective is bound up in “The Patient.” Fields and Weisberg play any easy explanation for Sam’s behavior close to the vest, letting the dialogue between Carell and Gleeson (and, just as crucially, the silent pauses in between) inch tensely towards articulating those truths. By being so narratively frugal, the show forces Alan and us to strain to pick up any piece of context that might save his life....

Kevin may be a ham, but his big sister Clancy (Sadie Stanley) can’t help but be jealous of her sibling’s ability to embrace his silly self — Kevin is the kind of kid who can put on a full-scale dance performance in a school bathroom, just for the fun of it — because she’s too scared to break out of her “band geek” shell. Still, neither sibling can shake the feeling that just nothing is happening in their lives, beyond their wacky best pals and regular school drama....

Fan expectations? Yes, they’re pretty high, but for director Ruben Fleischer, they’re nothing to be feared.
