While it’s easy to dismiss the Creative Arts Awards as a mere litmus test for the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony to come, it would be wrong to overlook what they say about themselves, first and foremost. And above all else, this year’s batch of winners were a testament to how much academy voters love consistency and comfort. For instance, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” never fails to impress voters; the series consistently picks up a handful of Emmys each year....

Set in Lagos, “Òlòturé” is the story of a naïve young journalist (Sharon Ooja) who goes undercover to expose the brutal underworld of human trafficking. She’s caught off-guard by the dangerous environment she finds, a place teeming with cruel traffickers, pimps, madames and unscrupulous politicians. She ultimately bonds with a group of prostitutes and becomes deeply buried in their world. Yet in her unrelenting pursuit to tell their stories, she’s so successful in inserting herself inside the trade that she doesn’t know how to get back out again, or whether she even wants to....

In her previous series of short films, Samadi turned her attention to the kind of thorny, character-rich dramas often associated with contemporary Iranian cinema (shades of Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation” are not hard to find in “180 Degree Rule”). For her feature directorial debut, Samadi again takes on well-drawn characters trapped in horrifying circumstances, many of which spring from the fabric of Iranian life. Yet, stretched over the course of a feature — a very brisk 83 minutes — the filmmaker fails to connect her leading lady with a tragic, nearly repulsive drama that only seems to exist to provoke, never to serve the characters that populate it....

The fifth and final season, which premieres on Wednesday, Febryary 8 at 10 p.m., will be it for the DJ Nash drama. “A Million Little Things” follows that group of buddies who become motivated to live fuller lives after the unexpected death of a close friend. This has been a most unusual year for Sparks. The only way to succeed is to remind their community that they provide something big corporations can’t: human connection....

“Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan commissioned two statues of characters Walter White and Jesse Pinkman to be housed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in honor of the Emmy-winning AMC series. Bryan Cranston portrayed high school teacher turned meth maker White, with Aaron Paul starring as White’s business associate, surrogate son, and drug dealer. “Breaking Bad,” which concluded in 2013, spurred the Netflix film “El Camino” and AMC’s prequel spin-off series “Better Call Saul,” centered on the origins of Bob Odenkirk’s cracked attorney....

The movie is based loosely on a true story from 1985, where authorities discovered a dead bear in the Chattahoochee National Forest of Georgia. The bear was found to have died after ingesting 75 pounds of 95-percent pure cocaine from a duffel bag in the woods. The bag belonged to Andrew C. Thornton II, a former narcotics officer and convicted drug smuggler, who dropped the supplies while flying over the forest during a supply run....

Jarecki’s long-awaited follow-up to his similarly dry — but still entertaining and informative — 2012 narrative debut, “Arbitrage,” certainly has good intentions. The opioid crisis and the many lives it has upended and ruined is fertile ground for cinematic exploration, all the better to illuminate tragic stories for examination and reflection. And for Jarecki, who also wrote the film’s script, the choice to include so many different sorts of stories related to the epidemic is telling: here, it seems, is a problem that has touched all sorts of people in all kinds of ways....

Inspired by the 1984 true story of a Dallas girls soccer team traveling to China to became world champions, “Dallas Sting” was set to star Matthew McConaughey as coach Bill Kinder and Emmy nominee Kaitlyn Dever as his daughter. Actual soccer players were cast as the team. Kari Skogland (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) was helming the feature from a script by “GLOW” creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch; “Dallas Sting” was produced by Skydance and Berlanti Schechter Productions....

The critically acclaimed novel turned three-time Academy Award winning film “Dangerous Liaisons” is now adapted into a Starz series, premiering November 6. We can’t definitively state that Season 2 of the FXX series “Dicktown” is the lone inhabitant of that sliver in the middle, but it’s almost certainly the only animated detective show that also has an impish parody of Tintin arriving with fanfare at the heart of its sophomore season. The show is driven by the same expansive web of Things that preoccupy its creator/writer/stars John Hodgman and David Rees, a creative engine that made its first batch of episodes in 2020 so distinct....
