The film shares DNA with writer/director Léa Mysius’ (co-writing with Paul Guilhaume) film “Ava,” a Critics’ Week entry in 2017 about a 13-year-old girl who learns she’s losing her hearing. There’s something conspicuously absent from a large portion of “The Investigation,” Tobias Lindholm’s dramatic retelling of the 2017 death of investigative journalist Kim Wall. It’s hard to imagine another treatment of this story that would span six episodes while omitting any onscreen depiction of eventual convicted murderer Peter Madsen. Some audiences may balk at the ways the HBO show (now available in full on HBO Max) removes some of these standard elements of biographical crime stories....
It’s impossible to say for sure, but there’s a scene in “The Queen’s Gambit” where it seems Alma Wheatley is at her happiest. Giddy and in the arms of a new love in a Mexico hotel, she waves at her adopted daughter Beth from across the lobby. Filming that scene was a bit of a whirlwind for the person playing her, too. Disney’s latest pandemic film release is “Raya and the Last Dragon,” an animated tale starring Kelly Marie Tran as lone warrior Raya, on a quest to track down the last living dragon, a.k.a. the only species that can stop the invading Druun monsters who threaten to destroy the world of Kumandra. The film will be released in theaters and via Disney+ Premier Access beginning March 5, which means that if you can’t make it to the theater (or movie theaters are still closed in your area), existing Disney+ subscribers can pay $29....
