Earlier: In an October 8 memo sent to employees, Netflix’s co-chief executive officer and chief content officer Ted Sarandos defended the controversial release of Dave Chappelle’s new stand-up comedy special “The Closer” (read IndieWire’s review here). Netflix released “The Closer” via streaming on October 5. Chappelle has come under fire since the special’s release for making homophobic and anti-trans jokes. Organizations such as GLAAD and The National Black Justice Coalition condemned “The Closer” and urged Netflix to pull the special from its platform....
In a report originally released by Bloomberg, the streaming service is said to be working on their own Spears documentary, set to be directed by Erin Lee Carr. According to the original article, Carr was already working on the documentary before Hulu’s New York Times-based production, and it is currently uncompleted. Netflix did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment. The project is interesting as there still seems to be a lot of speculation around it....
NYFCC is historically the first major critics’ group in the U.S. to announce its picks for best film and performances of the year. The news comes on the heels of the Gotham Awards, which recently awarded “Everything Everywhere All at Once” with the top prize for best feature and Charlotte Wells’ “Aftersun” for Breakthrough Director, with films like “TÁR” and “Murina” also honored. Founded in 1935, the NYFCC is made up of critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and online publications....
