Below, IndieWire has collected 16 new shows that are bound to get people talking, from long-anticipated adaptations (“Cowboy Bebop”) to the next lavish Ryan Murphy period drama (“Halston”) to hidden gems with awards potential (“Maid,” “Inventing Anna,” and “Pieces of Her”). (Plenty of returning shows will keep audiences streaming as well, so take a look at the bottom of this article for six new seasons of established favorites.) To be clear, these upcoming programs are either already scheduled or fully expected to premiere this year, so you can rest assured in what’s coming....

Box-office buzz is not a factor in this pandemic year, which gives Netflix an advantage. It has a long list of strong, widely seen contenders that yielded three of the seven PGA nominations: “David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet;” Kirsten Johnson’s imaginative ode to her father, “Dick Johnson Is Dead;” and heart-tugging audience favorite “My Octopus Teacher.” The nominees for the Documentary category are selected by the Documentary Nomination Jury, made up of at least fifty documentary producers who select between three and seven non-fiction motion-picture nominees....

But the episode also ends on a wonderful musical high, the crashing cymbals and blasting organ of “Get It While You Can” adding momentum to a rotating 360-degree shot that switches between Lyonne and Sevigny and back again. Janis Joplin’s rendition of the gleeful soul track isn’t really for either mother or daughter. It’s for us. It’s a celebration of the fact that “Russian Doll” is back and weirder than ever....

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dixon expressed his excitement about the new spinoff. After years of developing the series, he’s thrilled to be moving forward with a show that he hopes can rival the original. “These talks about the spin-off had been going on for two years,” said Reedus. “It was a good year before they announced that ‘The Walking Dead’ was going to end. And over the course of time, it kind of changed directions multiple times....

This year’s selection includes the hard-to-find “The Mother and the Whore” — which cameoed in the form of a poster featured in 2005’s “The Squid and the Whale” and brought the scandalous Jean Eustache some renewed attention. Starring Jean-Pierre Léaud, Bernadette Lafont, and Françoise Lebrun, the philosophical love triangle set against the sexual revolution divided Cannes audiences in 1973. Earlier this year, the Les Films du Losange restoration opened the Cannes Classics section....

Ikic’s offering is a special one, utilizing non-actors to tell a story close to their (and the filmmaker’s) heart. Per the film’s official synopsis: “Upon her arrival at an institution for people with mental disabilities, Maria becomes fast friends with the equally fiery Dragana. When it becomes clear that they are both in love with the more withdrawn Robert, their relationship is upset and gradually grows into a dangerous game of hide-and-seek to win him over....

The British born Australian star shot to fame in “Grease” opposite John Travolta in 1978. A four-time Grammy winner, Newton-John won Record of the Year for “I Honestly Love You” and “Physical,” as well as “Grease” song “You’re the One That I Want,” which still ranks as one of the bestselling singles of all time. Newton-John’s husband John Easterling confirmed her passing on Facebook. “Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” Easterling wrote....

These cheeky replies almost certainly contain a kernel of truth, but in the case of “The Card Counter,” they only tell a fraction of a story that predates “Star Wars” by decades. The movie, which finds Isaac delivering a sullen, introverted performance as former Abu Ghraib soldier William Tell, feels like a natural extension of the self-defeatist pariahs he’s played in everything from the bashful musician of “Inside Llewyn Davis” to doomed businessman of “A Most Violent Year....

The actress, alongside co-hosts Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, opened the March 27 ceremony with many a zinger, like how it was cheaper for the Academy to hire three female hosts than one man. While Hall thanked the opportunity to represent women of color onstage, Schumer added that she’ll be representing the “unbearable white women who call the cops when you get a little too loud.” Yet during Schumer’s later monologue, she ribbed the Oscars Best Picture nomination for “Don’t Look Up,” joking that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences clearly “‘Don’t Look Up’ reviews....

The favorite is Netflix’s first animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You,” about a grieving mother and father visited by shadows of themselves and their deceased young daughter (who was the victim of a school shooting). The monochromatic, hand-drawn short, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”), boasts an illustrated style that represents haunting memories, bolstered by an all-female animation team supervised by CalArts graduate Youngran Nho....

Getting a boost during 2021 is any film that debuted to real, live audiences at a film festival like Cannes. Writers branch voters often look overseas for their contenders. Auteur Joachim Trier (and writer Eskil Vogt) landed a surprise nomination for Norway’s International Feature Film nominee “The Worst Person in the World,” a coming-of-age drama starring Cannes Best Actress winner Renate Reinsve, which competes against a slate of high-powered Best Picture contenders....

“Word got out that I wanted to do a superhero film and to Marvel’s credit — on a movie that didn’t require a woman at all — they hired me,” Jenkins said. “So, I’ve always been super grateful to them even though it didn’t work out. They wanted to do a story that I thought was not going to succeed, and I knew it couldn’t be me. It couldn’t be me that had that happen....

“We wanted to evolve the show, but the conversation stopped with that,” said co-creator Sam Zvibleman, when he and Konkle were on the Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast. “None of us quite decided, or pointed to exactly what that meant.” Some of the natural evolution came from the mining of the creators’ personal stories of their middle school years, like the exploration of Konkle’s parents getting divorced and her first bouts with depression at that age....

While paying a visit to “The Graham Norton Show” on New Year’s Eve (via Insider), Dinklage agreed that it was a “relief,” when asked by the host, when the eight-episode series ended. Dinklage won a Primetime Emmy Award for best supporting actor four times for his role as Tyrion Lannister. “Yeah,” Dinklage said. “I mean, it’s time to move on, as hard as it is.” He added that while, on most projects, a cast forms close relationships and “then you don’t see each other again,” but in the case of “Game of Thrones,” the cast was a “family....

And that is not easy to do. Gone are the days of Saturns and Dreamcasts and Neo Geos that seemed to promise something alien or otherworldly inside every box; gone is the shock of firing up “Super Mario 64” for the very first time, and feeling that whoosh of three-dimensional wonder as a quick run around Peach’s castle became enough to make even the most sacred games of the previous era feel like sprite-based cave paintings by comparison....

At the same time, Disney’s “Mulan” is now available on platforms beyond Disney+ for $29.99, and is #1 at the revenue-based FandangoNow. “Ava” also continues its successful showings, with first place at Spectrum (their weekly chart ends on Thursday, limiting the showings for the two more recent releases). “Trump Card” is pitched as an expose of “socialism, corruption, and the deep state,” and clearly aimed at Election Day interest. In his past films (which received theatrical release), D’Souza preferred to specifically demonize Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton....

The Oscar winner detailed the formative moviegoing experience that shaped how he viewed masculinity after his mother’s boyfriend took him as a child to see “100 Rifles.” Starring Jim Brown, Burt Reynolds, and Raquel Welch, the film is a classic American Western about a thief (Reynolds) who is trying to outrun the local sheriff (Brown). Tarantino explained on “Real Time with Bill Maher” while promoting the book “Cinema Speculation,” out November 1, that he watched “100 Rifles” with an all-Black audience, and the crowd loudly complained about opening film “The Bus Is Coming....

The theater, which seats 228 people, first opened in 1929. It was long subsidized by Tarantino before he took over in 2007 to keep the location open and screening classic movies on real celluloid film prints. (Tarantino became the new landlord when the previous owner, Sherman Torgan, died.) Since 2014 Tarantino also served as head curator of the venue, mandating that only 16mm and 35mm prints be shown, and chucking out the digital project brought in by Torgan’s son Michael....

Youssef stars in the Hulu comedy about a wayward Egyptian-American millennial, which often sits in the discomfort of his self involvement, his mistakes, and the consequences of his actions. “Some people call it cringey, but I think I call it naked,” Youssef told IndieWire over the phone on the heels of Season 3’s Hulu premiere. “There’s just this nakedness that I really enjoy where I’m not trying to fabricate, I’m not trying to be someone who’s just going for shock value....

Former porn star Mikey Saber (Simon Rex) might be “blessed” — at least according to the sore underage girl he’s grooming during a post-coital chat in the flatbed of her pickup truck — but the reality of the situation is that the guy is nothing less than a living curse. He’s a big-dicked, self-obsessed, hyper-opportunistic hex of a man whose puppy dog con artist schtick is so transparent that even naive teenagers can see right through it, which is exactly why people lower their guard and let him in....
