Apple introduced a new fleet of 24” iMacs during Tuesday’s Apple Event, but the razor thin computers won’t be hitting the market until late May. If you work in the fast-paced field of video editing, and can’t always afford to wait an extra month to get a new computer, we picked out a couple of affordable alternatives that won’t blow your budget out of the water. A quick internet search for the best iMacs for video editing usually brings up the 27” iMac Pro. It’s durable and reliable, and usually comes with a price tag of around $4,000. If you don’t have that much to spend, the 27” iMac with Retina 5K display will get the job done for about half the price.
27″ Apple iMac with Retina 5K Display
The iMac’s 5K retina display uses a billion colors and 500 nits of brightness for better graphics and sharper text (by comparison, the forthcoming 24″ iMac features a 4.5K retina display and despite being powered by an M1 chip, the screen size may not be ideal for all video editors). As far as hardware and features go, the 27” iMac features a 10-Core Intel Core i9 processor, 8GB of DDR Ram (up to 16 GB GDDR6 memory), and four USB ports. The 27” iMac can also be configured to 128GB of memory — which is double the capacity of the previous generation — and up to 8TB SSD storage. It also includes True Tone technology that adjusts color and intensity for a more natural viewing experience, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, and studio-quality speakers offering up high fidelity sound.

Another affordable option: the iMac Mini M1. Apart from the compact 7.7” square design, the Mini M1 features up to six times faster graphics, and an 8-core CPU, tripling the processor performance speed of its predecessor. Other features include four USB ports, two Thunderbolt ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.0, and Wi-Fi 6 to deliver a better all-around performance.
