With Ronda Rousey lying low for the last few years and Gina Carano not lying nearly low enough, the fighter-to-actress pipeline isn’t flowing as steadily as it once was. But now a new challenger has entered the ring with “Catch the Fair One,” and she’s already a WBA champion in two other weight classes. After her bruising yet vulnerable lead performance in Josef Kubota Wladyka’s sex-trafficking thriller, boxer Kali Reis deserves to add another title belt to her collection (and not just because there’s so little in the way of competition)....

“Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” will become the streamer’s first live-streamed global event when Rock takes the stage at 10 p.m. EST, March 4, in Baltimore. That’s less than a year after The Slap, when Will Smith struck Rock during the live Oscars broadcast. Presumably, there will be no such interruption during this live event. “Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” Netflix VP of Stand-Up and Comedy Robbie Praw said in a statement at the time of the special’s initial announcement....

“Cinderella” will present a modern take on the traditional story, with Cabello playing the titular heroine as an ambitious young girl whose dreams for her life are bigger than the world she lives in. With the help of her Fabulous Godmother (“Pose” Emmy winner Porter), she sings and dances her way into making her dreams come true. “Cinderella” was written and directed by Kay Cannon, who is best know for writing and producing the “Pitch Perfect” movies....

Let Walter Hill take you back to the Old West and diplomacy, 1897-style, where differences are figured out with card games and bullwhips, and folks have itching powder all over their trigger fingers. Shooting someone dead is presented as a go-to for how to resolve an argument in this world. References to guns are made with such regularity that it becomes unclear whether this is a straight Western or a pastiche....

For the uninitiated who have only peeked at the game’s cover art or various screenshots, that’s all probably a bit confusing. The original “Doki Doki Literature Club” marketed itself as a stereotypical cutesy anime dating simulator; you play as a faceless high school otaku who is coerced by his bubbly childhood friend into joining the school’s small Literature Club. Your character doesn’t have an interest in literature, but he does want a girlfriend, and the Literature Club is populated by a quartet of cute anime women who take an inexplicable liking to the protagonist....

The performance of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s African female warrior film, which cost $15 million more than Olivia Wilde’s much-discussed 1950s “Stepford Wives”-adjacent drama with Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, and Chris Pine, was regarded as strong, in part because of lower expectations. After the barrage of publicity surrounding its Venice showing, “Darling” became a box-office cause celebre with consensus of an opening weekend of $20 million or higher. However, it faced an above-average drop from its combined preview and Friday results....

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert were recently interviewed by Edgar Wright for Sight and Sound, where they discussed maximalist cinema and why their indie multiverse hit has resonated so strongly with audiences around the globe. The directors, collectively known as the Daniels, said that while the film largely avoids exploring the Internet in favor of traveling to other universes, the themes of over-stimulation and abundance of choice were fueled by internet culture....

The release date has changed, both in the U.S. and worldwide, multiple times since. Now that the domestic opening day is here, the film could be the best test of theater recovery. Opening weekend gross forecasts are unscientific, often over-influenced by low-ball projections from studios hoping that if what they actually expect happens, their spin will improve media response to the result. The Hulu drama series based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel returns September 14, picking up after ex-handmaid June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) killed Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes). Waterford’s wife Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) seeks revenge. The teaser for Season 5 shows a flashback to Commander Waterford being chased by handmaids through the woods, with Emily Malek (Alexis Bledel) among those attacking him. June (Moss) is then seen washing blood off her hands....

The joke here isn’t all that fresh. Contrasting sweet intentions with disturbing reality is a hallmark of shock comedy; so much so, that in 2020 it takes more than showing an upsetting act or cursing up a storm to get laughs. People are less easily startled and quicker to recognize familiar beats, and rarely does creator Ben Hoffman try to subvert expectations during “Hoops.” Instead, he eagerly leans into repeating the same profane bits again and again, exemplifying the belief that Stewie’s elongated critique of Brian’s nonexistent novel is the pinnacle of modern comedy....

Per AFI FEST’s official synopsis: “Suburban housewife Jean (Brosnahan) lives a seemingly easy life, supported by husband Eddie’s (Bill Heck) career as a thief. But when Eddie betrays his partners, Jean and her baby are forced to go on the run, and Eddie’s old friend Cal (Arinzé Kene) is tasked with the job of keeping them safe. After Cal mysteriously disappears, Jean befriends Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake), and the two women set out on a perilous journey into the heart of Eddie’s criminal underworld....

The nine-year-old series features films that are directed by some of the most renowned female filmmakers, including Lucrecia Martel, Haifaa Al-Mansour, Agnès Varda, Ava DuVernay, Naomi Kawase, Lynne Ramsay, and of course Diop, whose feature debut made history when “Atlantics” premiered at Cannes in 2019, winning the Grand Prix. Diop became the first Black woman to direct a film featured in the festival’s Competition section. “Atlantics” was also selected as Senegal’s entry for Best International Film Oscar consideration, making the December shortlist....

The three-platform roll-out is unusual but likely a sign of things to come as NBCUniversal and competing entertainment companies work to manage their growing number of television platforms. While new television shows are typically only available on a single platform, companies such as NBCUniversal have a vested interest in keeping their older broadcast and cable networks relevant while simultaneously promoting new platforms like Peacock. While there haven’t been many examples of television shows premiering on multiple platforms owned by a single conglomerate, companies such as WarnerMedia and Disney, which have launched their own streaming services in the last year, have taken steps to synergize their various television platforms....

The series was viewed for 1,588 million minutes, while Netflix’s “Clickbait” trailed in second place with 732 million minutes viewed, per Nielsen’s latest report on the most-viewed streaming TV shows. The company’s rankings were based on viewership data from from September 13 to September 19....

The long, immersive scenes allow viewers to become a part of the classroom, living through the school day along with the disciples. In part, that’s because Speth’s documentary can feel almost as long as a school day: At three hours and 37 minutes, it’s a daunting plunge, but not an unprecedented one....

Rather than expose the inhumane practices of the mining industry, which is well-traveled terrain, “Diamonds Last Forever” sets its sights on the power players up the chain who are inflating the value of the naturally occurring stones. The film opens with staticky archival footage of diamond commercials, stilted scenes of coiffed women selling eager men on bigger and bigger diamonds. Setting its sights on international diamond company De Beers, the film reminds us of the famous line that may soon become a lie — “Diamonds Are Forever” — a hugely successful marketing ploy from De Beers that became universally believed....
