The 2019 Emmy Awards went without a host, but the 2020 Emmy Awards — the 72nd edition of the Television Academy’s biggest night — went without an audience. Host Jimmy Kimmel and the production team presented 23 awards during the September 20 telecast to nominees scattered across the globe. It was after 4 a.m. in London when “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong accepted the award for Outstanding Drama Series; the cast of “Schitt’s Creek” was gathered in Toronto when the little Canadian comedy that could swept the comedy categories an hour or two before. And perhaps surprisingly, in a night where the chance of a technical snafu was high, there were few major mishaps.

As always, the Emmys honored some of the best in television: “Schitt’s Creek,” “Watchmen,” “Succession,” and more. The Creative Arts Emmys, handed out by host Nicole Byer over the course of five live-streamed nights the week before, honored even more: Maya Rudolph took home two trophies and Eddie Murphy won his first-ever Emmy, among many other wins. The year’s biggest upsets included the history-making “Schitt’s Creek” sweep and Zendaya as the youngest-ever winner (and second Black winner) in her category. Regina King took home her fourth Primetime Emmy, making her the most-decorated Black performer in history (tied with Alfre Woodard).
